Inside is an interview with John Barrowman in which he criticises the BBC for cutting the series to five episodes following its move to BBC1. Barrowman said "We were the most successful show on BBC3, ever. We moved to BBC2 because the ratings were so good, the ratings were great again and we were beating shows that had been on BBC2 for a long time. The decision was made to go to BBC1, and then we were cut. From 13 episodes down to five. "The five episodes, the miniseries as I call it, are incredible, I have no doubt about that, but personally, I felt like we were being punished. Other shows move from BBC3 and 2 to 1, and they don't get cut. So why are we? It felt like every time we moved we had to prove ourselves." A BBC spokesman has denied Torchwood was being "punished", saying they wanted to create an "event" to launch the show on BBC1, with the new series stripped across one week. Target on the Radio Broadcasting June 20, 2009 Posted By Marcus In a new documentary, Mark Gatiss explores the history of the Target book range for BBC Radio Four.In the days before domestic video players and multi channel Television, the only way for fans to relive Doctor Who episodes, or catch up with stories they had missed, was through the hugely popular Doctor Who novelisations, published throughout the 70's and 80's. Gatiss, a self confessed Doctor Who fan, who has written and stared in the revived series, presents On the Outside it Looked Like an Old Fashioned Police Box. Guest star picture on the web PressClips June 17, 2009 Posted By Paul HayesVarious news sources online and in print - including science fiction website io9 and British tabloid newspaper The Sun - have in recent days been running a picture from behind-the-scenes of David Tennant's forthcoming two-part finale in Doctor Who. The image, apparently a screen grab from a video, shows David Tennant along with guest star Timothy Dalton and another actor, whose presence in the story may be considered a spoiler, so his name is given in the spoiler box below.
Dalton's role in the forthcoming specials is not currently known. ![]() The other actor pictured along with Dalton and Tennant is John Simm, who played The Master in the final three episodes of the third series of Doctor Who. While a brand new community in its own right, Gallifrey Base is created and administered by Steve Hill, who has served as DWF's senior forum administrator for the past several years, and features many of the recent staff members of our Forum here. Everything that made the DWF so successful with many users -- new and classic episode discussions, DVD discussions, the "Enlightenment" section, the 'real world' discussion sections, and so forth -- are duplicated in Gallifrey Base... with the added bonus of a "fresh start" to everything. As of August 1, the doctorwhoforum.com URL will redirect from our own Forum to the new Gallifrey Base forum. (Please note: if you're trying to get to Gallifrey Base and are unsuccessful - due to DNS switchover, the way the Internet looks things up - then CLICK HERE instead for the next 24 hours or so. Likewise, if Gallifrey Base sends you an "Activation Required" email and your links don't work, click here to confirm. Again, these issues are natural for new sites and will be sorted out automatically within the next 12 hours or so...) Also getting ready for opening is the newest incarnation of The Doctor Who News Page, which will be affiliated with Gallifrey Base. The entire current news team at the News Page here at Outpost Gallifrey has moved over to a blog-style news page which will also be adding some new team members and will be kept up to date with all the latest. Benjamin Elliott's popular "This Week in Doctor Who" column will continue there as well, and some new features are being installed, including aggregate RSS feeds from other popular Doctor Who news sites, to keep you fully updated on the worlds of Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. As soon as the new News Page is ready for launch, within the next few weeks, doctorwhonews.com will point there (it currently points to the news page here). Gallifrey Base is also subsuming a very popular part of the Outpost Gallifrey archive that was discontinued some time ago, but is being resumed and will be fully updated shortly after launch: the entire contents of OG's Doctor Who Episode Guide, complete with its library of indexed and searchable database (actors, crew members, and so forth). Many have relied heavily on the Episode Guide in the past, and we're happy to announce that the Gallifrey Base team has decided to include this as part of their website... and it will be fully public (i.e. no forum registration required). Meanwhile, as previously announced, on August 1 the entire gallifreyone.com website will consist of the webspace for the Gallifrey One conventions, our popular North American Doctor Who conventions every February here in Los Angeles. Gallifrey Base will assume the role of the convention's official discussion board (with a thread in GB's conventions section) alongside our sister convention, ChicagoTARDIS, as well as discussions on many other worldwide convention events. Look for updates to the Gallifrey 2010 convention -- featuring Peter Davison as our first announced guest -- very soon. Finally... now that the dust has settled over the announcement of the closure of Outpost Gallifrey and, most especially, the Doctor Who Forum, we are delighted that not only has Gallifrey Base been started, but many people have started some new and fun communities and sites, and some other long time discussion forum have received an influx of new members. We encourage everyone to try both Gallifrey Base and the new Doctor Who News Page, as well as some of the other sites with forum communities that Outpost Gallifrey heartily recommends, as follows: Doctor Who Online, a long-time friendly rival of Outpost Gallifrey, with its own thriving community featuring many special guests Kasterborous, with a fantastic magazine-like news section and a pleasant forum community Outpost Doctor Who, a brand new community begun by DWF members that's already going strong Planet Kembel, formerly the Ian Levine Doctor Who Discussion Forum Outpost Wrinkly, a small community of friendly DWF folks The Leisure Hive, a new community of fans created from the DWF adult section (and still adults only, please!) The Big Finish Forums, an official discussion site for the Big Finish Doctor Who audios The Whoniverse, a nice information resource with its own discussion forum There are many others, but these are a good start and all great places to find vast numbers of fellow fans online. We will have more information for you before the official close of this site and forum, as our community moves on to new adventures! It is also hoped that costumes from the series will also be on show. Head designer of Experience Design, Martin Wilkie said: "A Torchwood Exhibition would be a great addition to the Bay area. We have looked at several sites for a Torchwood Exhibition but we are hoping that this one might be available soon. The appeal of Torchwood brings many visitors to Cardiff Bay, especially to see the Torchwood Water Tower. The building we are hoping to use for the Torchwood Exhibition is near this famous TV landmark." A Georgian building in Bute Crescent has been identified as a possible location for the exhibition, and Cardiff council are currently reviewing the application, which is hoped to open in July. British Fantasy Awards Miscellaneous June 7, 2009 Posted By Josiah Rowe The British Fantasy Society, which has presented the British Fantasy Awards since 1971, is this year adding a category for Best Television, and Doctor Who has been nominated for the new category, which does not appear to be strictly limited to the fantasy genre. Also nominated are "Battlestar Galactica", "Dead Set", "Supernatural" and "Dexter".Doctor Who: The Writer's Tale by Russell T Davies and Benjamin Cook has also been nominated for an award in the Best Non-Fiction category. A full list of the award nominees is linked from the BFA's website. The winners will be announced in September at the BFA's convention, FantasyCon. Thanks to "Rolnikov" of the Doctor Who Forum. Outpost Gallifrey and the Doctor Who Forum To Close July 31 Miscellaneous June 2, 2009 Posted By Shaun Lyon Outpost Gallifrey and the Doctor Who Forum, the most popular Doctor Who fan website on the Internet, will be closing for good as of July 31, 2009. The announcement was made in the Forum and the Doctor Who News Page on June 2 by owner/operator Shaun Lyon, whose statement about the closure is below. The closure of the site has been planned for a couple of months. It should be noted that this major announcement will NOT affect the Gallifrey One conventions, preparations for the next installment of which, Gallifrey One: Blackjack 21, is full speed ahead for February 2010 in Los Angeles. (Gallifreyone.com will simply redirect to the convention page as of August 1, 2009.) For many, this will come as an enormous surprise. For some, probably not so much. Two years ago, I shut down the day-to-day operations of the Outpost Gallifrey website, retaining its News Page as a continuing entity administered by news editors, as well as the Forum run by a moderator team. But all good things must come to an end, and several months ago, I began planning the eventual shutdown of the website and forum by taking a first step: the cessation of taking paid patron memberships, in order to run down the cash coffers (which I projected could last around five to six months without any additional input from new or renewing members -- current patrons were simply extended indefinitely as we announced). At the end of July, any remaining funding (expected to be very little, if any) will be donated to a noted charity, save for costs for the one item that *will* (and actually must) continue to function at gallifreyone.com -- the web space for our long-running Doctor Who convention, Gallifrey One, which enters its twenty-first iteration next February. Since 1996, Outpost Gallifrey has served as a valuable source of news and information in the online world. Since 2001, the Doctor Who Forum has created an enormous sense of community amongst Doctor Who fans, far longer than I (or perhaps anyone) ever anticipated. When the BBC shut its own DW forums down, we underwent massive growth that created the largest focus for online Doctor Who discussion and debate in cyberspace, and I'm very proud of that fact. Of course, the announcement of the new series in 2003 certainly helped that, and its debut has seen our profile rise exponentially. But as they say, it's better to go out on a high, which is exactly what we're doing. Some may wonder if there is a catalyst for this decision, when in fact it's nothing but a simple and straightforward desire to move onto other things... a decision I made several months ago, counselled by many friends and supporters for a long time. People will wonder out loud: why don't we spin it off, or why don't I pass it along to others? Simply put, Outpost Gallifrey is nothing but a concept, a concept I created, but which now rests in the hands of the fans who utilize it every day. It's a title, and you don't need a title to continue... you already have the community. Like our site and forum, the Internet has grown exponentially. There are other communities to visit on the Internet, obviously, and we encourage you to visit them. But of course, if these communities do not serve your needs (and we expect many won't), we encourage you to take the course that I did 13 years ago: create your own space. This is, in fact, why we're giving notice to the Forum community two months early -- sufficient time for our members to find their own direction, to create new communities, new forums, and perhaps utilize new methods of communication. Through the friendships and community you've created here. Outpost Gallifrey (and its Forum) have always remained near and dear to my heart. We've been a powerful voice in the online Doctor Who world, collectively, and the powers that be have listened (and continue to be active, if invisible, readers of what has been said). We've helped influence the course of the Doctor Who universe, through fan interaction with Big Finish Productions, BBC Books, independent publishers and even the Doctor Who Production Team. And we've made terrific friends throughout the world, from inside the BBC to inside the homes of tens of thousands of fans in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and elsewhere. I am eternally grateful to everyone who made this site and forum a reality, from a spectacular team of administrators and moderators (led by the phenomenal efforts of Steve Hill) in our Forum, to our brilliant news editors who have kept the News Page updated as often as possible with the latest from the world of Doctor Who, to everyone else who has supported us and made us the biggest and most popular fan-run site on the Internet for the past thirteen years, through good times and bad. Thank you, everyone. New Canadian Home for Doctor Who Confirmed Broadcasting June 2, 2009 Posted By Mike Doran The Doctor Who Blog is reporting that Canada's Space channel is now the home of Doctor Who in Canada, officially ending the series' time with former co-production partner the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.Space will air Planet of the Dead on Saturday July 25th. Waters of Mars and the two other specials to follow will air on Space in late 2009 and early 2010. Beginning in March 2010 Space will have the rights to show Series One to Four of the show as well as The Christmas Invasion and The Runaway Bride. Voyage of the Damned, which was never aired by the CBC, will be available to Space as of April 2010. The Next Doctor was already aired by Space in March 2009. Finally, Space will be airing Series Five in 2010. Launched in April 2005 with a great deal of publicity by the CBC just 10 days after the premiere on the BBC Doctor Who eventually found itself out of favour with changing CBC management despite continued strong ratings through all four series. BBC America HD: Planet of the Dead and Torchwood in July Broadcasting June 1, 2009 Posted By Josiah Rowe BBC America has announced that their new BBC America HD channel will launch in July with the HD broadcast of Torchwood: Children of Earth and the latest Doctor Who special, Planet of the Dead. Torchwood: Children of Earth will air on BBC America HD and BBC America on five consecutive nights, beginning on Monday, July 20. Planet of the Dead will follow on Sunday, July 26. (As previously announced, the 2008 Christmas special, The Next Doctor, will air on BBC America on Saturday, June 27.)It is not known whether earlier plans for "Children of Earth" to be aired on the same day on BBC America and BBC One are still on track. British television channels traditionally announce their schedules closer to broadcast date than American channels do, so the UK broadcast date for "Children of Earth" will probably not be confirmed for several weeks. Full details for the launch of BBC America HD, including broadcast times and information about "Being Human" and "Primeval", are available here and here. Australian news and ratings Broadcasting June 1, 2009 Posted By Adam Kirk The 'fast-tracked' Planet of the Dead has debuted in Australia to excellent ratings. The Easter special averaged 1,051,000 in the five major capital cities, compared to the 738,000 viewers who watched 'The Next Doctor' in January or the 869,000 who watched the Michael Palin special 'Around the World in 20 Years' the week before at 7.30pm. 'Planet' was the ABC's top rating drama of the day and its second highest rating show after the 7pm news. Meanwhile the ABC has also started promoting Torchwood which will commence on ABC2 with 'Everything Changes' on Friday 19 June 2009 at 8.30pm. The national broadcaster has the rights to the first two series of 'Torchwood' and has also indicated it will screen Children of Earth at some later stage.Meanwhile, 'Planet' and the impending departure of David Tennant has attracted some local media attention. Michael Idato of The Sydney Morning Herald has spoken to David Tennant about his thoughts upon leaving the show. The Canberra Times and TV Week also feature interviews with Tennant, the latter with a poll saying that 68% of readers will miss his incarnation of the Doctor. Ruth Ritchie describes 'Planet of the Dead' a 'must see' and Kerrie Murphy of The Weekend Australia writes that while 'the plot...isn't the greatest...it's still a terrific jaunt.' Melinda Houston of The Age comments that 'a dimension-jumping London bus, evil steel stingrays, friendly giant flies and a very dashing new companion - and the kind of witty, warm-hearted writing we've come to expect - make this one-off a real treat.' Troy Lennon of The Daily Telegraph also writes of 'Planet' that it 'is fast-paced, has great effects, the right amount of science to make it almost sound plausible and enough fantasy to excite the imagination.' Thanks to the contributors to the Australian forums. BBC News reports that she studied acting at Telford College in Edinburgh, and has also appeared in The Kevin Bishop Show and the forthcoming film Outcast, starring James Nesbitt. In the press release, executive producer and chief writer Steven Moffat is quoted as saying: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too." Gillan herself says: "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it. Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can't wait to get started!" The news is also being reported by, among many others: Children's BBC, InTheNews.co.uk, Digital Spy, Den of Geek, Broadcast Now, The Stage, The Sun and The Guardian. New Children of Earth trailer Torchwood May 29, 2009 Posted By Josiah RoweBBC and BBC America have released a new trailer for Torchwood: Children of Earth. BBC America says that the 5-part miniseries will be broadcast in July. The trailer can be seen below:
Tennant's Hamlet on Television People May 29, 2009 Posted By Marcus The BBC has confirmed that David Tennant is to reprise his role as Hamlet for BBC Two. Last year he received rave reviews for playing the Dane on stage in the Royal Shakespeare Company production, first at Stratford Upon Avon and later in London.Tickets for the stage performances sold out in hours and the Guardian hailed Tennant the "best Hamlet in years". For the television production Tennant will be joined by all of the key members of the stage cast, including the actor Patrick Stewart, who plays Claudius. BBC Two controller Janice Hadlow said the three-hour tv Hamlet was "a wonderful opportunity.. to bring one of the great stage successes of last year to a wider audience". The RSC have revealed that filming will take place on location, while retaining the quality and tone of the stage production. Filming begins in June for broadcast later this year in the UK. Broadcasts in the US and Japan will follow in 2010. To support the new film of Hamlet there will be an online BBC site, which is being created in collaboration with the RSC. It will feature behind-the-scenes stills and footage, specially shot interviews with the actors talking about their characters and how they approached the play and interviews with director Gregory Doran. A DVD of the film is planned and will be on sale after the broadcast date. US Broadcasting Details for Tennant Specials Broadcasting May 27, 2009 Posted By R. Alan SilerIn a turnabout from a previous arrangement, BBC America now has first US broadcast rights for the soon-to-be-aired hour-long specials of Doctor Who, Variety reported today. The Next Doctor, the show's 2008 Christmas episode, will make its US debut at 9:00 p.m. on June 27, followed by Planet of the Dead in July (date TBA). Specific US air dates will be determined for the subsequent specials after they've aired in the UK. BBC America - which has to bid for British shows just like any other American broadcaster - will continue its first run deal on Torchwood, airing that show's third season in July. Other science fiction shows debuting on the network this summer include Being Human (starting July 25) and Survivors, starring Doctor Who's Freema Agyeman (date TBA). The third season of ITV's dinosaur time romp Primeval is currently airing on the network. Current BBC America president Garth Ancier says that's the network should always have had Doctor Who. "If I'd been here [when the original deal was made]," Ancier said, "we wouldn't have sold it, to be quite honest." For the last four years, the Sci Fi Channel has held first rights, with BBC America holding second rights. |
