2005 Poll Results The results of the 2005 Doctor Who Series One poll |
Outpost Gallifrey's Doctor Who 40th Anniversary Poll was conducted in late 2003 at the height of the year's celebrations over this landmark achievement. The rules for that year's story poll were simple... instead of voting for one's favorite, as in previous polls, users were asked to rank each story. Obviously this can be very daunting to people, having to rank 163 entries story by story, so while "An Unearthly Child" (the first story) received over 1100 votes, "The Savages" (which doesn't exist anymore in the BBC archives) received only 407 votes. Nevertheless, with such a large group of people, we felt it very representative of online Doctor Who fandom at large, enough to provide an accurate tally of votes. On the following chart we've provided the ranking (in order), the story title (which is clickable to our episode guide page for the story), the score, the number of votes each story received, the Doctor and the season. The score provided the ranking; each story was rated on a scale from 1-5, 5 being best, 1 being worst. It's of interest to note that the lowest-ranked story, "The Twin Dilemma" received a total low score of 2.01 - which ranks at "mediocre". In other words, out of all the rankings of each story, none was voted below "mediocre" -- leading us to conclude that every story has its fans, and no Doctor Who story is truly considered mesmerisingly awful that one cannot find the good in it. Meanwhile, on the rankings, please note that ties are counted as the same, i.e. three stories took the #11 slot. The top ten vote-getters are separated. "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" narrowly beat the story voted #1 in this year's Doctor Who Magazine poll, "The Caves of Androzani". Perhaps the biggest surprise here was the high placements of "The Evil of the Daleks" and "The Web of Fear," stories that do not exist in their entirety.
